1981

The legend is born

The Mitsubishi Pajero makes its official public debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1981. It’s not yet clear whether this vehicle will win rallies, master the off-road, or capture the public’s admiration.

1983

Gen 1 Pajero launches in Australia

The boxy, short-wheelbase Pajero revolutionises Australia’s 4WD market, offering a new blend of genuine off-road capability and everyday comfort that no rival could match.

1985

The rise of a champion

Pajero achieves its maiden victory in the 1985 Dakar Rally. Stay tuned – there are plenty more to come.

1991

Gen 2 Pajero - Choose your adventure

A ground-up redesign delivers a larger body, a more refined interior and, most importantly, the Super Select 4WD system. This world-first innovation lets drivers choose between drive modes for both high-range and low-range 4WD on different terrains.

1997

Built to win Dakar

The Pajero Evolution was produced as a special road-legal homologation vehicle, permitting Pajero’s continued entry (and victory) in the Dakar Rally. Only 2,700 were ever produced, but its legacy as a powerful, rally-built racer endures.

2000

Gen 3 Pajero

The Gen 3 Pajero updates the separate chassis for a car-like monocoque body with fully independent suspension, transforming on-road comfort without sacrificing off-road credibility.

2001

The first overall victory for a female driver

Pajero wins its 6th Dakar title, with Jutta Kleinschmidt behind the wheel. She’s the first, and only, woman to win the Dakar Rally.

2006

Gen 4 Pajero - The modern era begins

Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the Gen 4 Pajero brings boomerang shaped headlights, upgraded safety tech, and a refined turbo-diesel engine that will power Australians for fifteen years.

2007

Crowned the King of the Desert

Seven. Consecutive. Wins. Pajero takes down an unprecedented record, one that still stands to this day. As Pajero achieves its historical 12th win, it’s crowned the King of the Desert.

2021

End of an era

After 40 years and four generations, production of the Pajero ceases in 2021. It’s the end of a chapter for one of the most beloved 4WDs ever sold in Australia.

2026

A legend is returning

Pajero will be back in 2026, tougher, more capable and more stylish than ever.
